I’d like to set up my scale for multiple users, what should I do?

Your scale supports unlimited number of users. It is perfect for your entire family use. It is very useful for situations like Yoga classes, weight loss clubs, etc.

Three types of users are supported:

(1) Individual scale users. Each person downloads Arboleaf app to one’s own smartphone, creates a separate individual account. The user’s measurement data syncs with the user’s own app. Each person is independent and keeps measurement data private. This is the most common practice for multiple people to use one scale. Share the scale but not the data. To make sure to keep your measurement private, you need to open your app each time when you use the scale, so your measurements will be synced to your app immediately.

(2) A scale user is under an account owner. The user does not have an independent account. This user’s measurements sync to the account owner’s app. The account owner has measurement data of all users. Some examples of this type of users are: children under their parents, or a group of people under their coach. It is ideal for parents to track their children’s weights or fitness coaches to track their clients’ progresses.

To add such a user, please do following.

  • Tap on “My Account” at bottom right, then tap on “Add a user.”

  • Tap on “Add a Scale User”. You need to fill in this new user’s name and personal info. Tap on “Confirm” when complete.

(3) The 3rd type is called “Friends”. Each friend has an individual account, syncs data to one’s own account. One user can “Add a Friend”, then a friend request will be sent out. After the friend request is accepted, the two users become “Friends”. Between the two friends, they can view each other’s measurement history but not other’s personal information in the profile. It is great for weight loss buddies to hold each other accountable and encourage each other.

  • To add such a Friend, go to “My Account” > “Add a user” > “Add a Friend”.

The following image shows an Account owner (Jessica) has two users under her account (Nicolas and Emily) and one friend (Chris Anderson).

Setup

Do I need to download mobile app to use my scale?

Yes, if you want to measure full body compositions and take advantage of the smart functions.

Without the Arboleaf mobile app you can only measure body weight just like a regular digital weight scale.

You need the mobile app to access your body composition information, such as body fat, body water, muscle mass, etc., to track your weight and body fat and other body composition data. In other words, the scale and the mobile app together make a complete smart body composition scale.

How does the scale measure my body fat and other body compositions?

Like most household body fat scales, the Arboleaf Smart Body Composition Scales use the Bio-electrical Impedance Analysis or Bioimpedance Analysis (BIA) Method to assess body compositions. Measuring body fat in relation to lean body mass, it is an integral part of a health and nutrition evaluations.

This non-invasive test simply involves your feet touching four electrodes on the scale. A low level, imperceptible electrical current is sent through the body. The flow of the current is affected by the amount of water in the body. The device measures how this signal is impeded through different types of tissue. Tissues that contain large amounts of fluid and electrolytes, such as blood, have high conductivity, but fat and bone slow the signal down. As BIA determines the resistance to flow of the current as it passes through the body, it provides estimates of body water from which body fat is calculated using selected algorithms.

It is why the measurements need to be done barefoot, with user’s both feet on the scale touching the metal pads.

What are body types?

Body types are determined by the level of measured body fat and BMI numbers. We categorize into nine body types:

Skinny Fat
Overweight
Heavy
Under Exercised
Normal
Fit
Skinny
Muscular
Very Muscular

Please note that here we use common English words to describe body types. These are not scientific terminologies. Because the Arboleaf scales are designed for household uses, these body types shouldn’t be used for professional or clinic purposes.

Why do we have more than 100% when all components added up?

The main components of the chemical structure of human body include fat tissues, water, protein, and inorganic tissues. A fat tissue is mainly comprised of fat and water, wherein water accounts for about 25% of total fat tissues. A muscle tissue is mainly comprised of protein and water, wherein water accounts for about 70% of total muscle tissues.

This body fat scale measures contents of fat tissues, muscle tissues, water, bone, and other major tissues in human body. Due to various tissues containing certain proportions of water, the sum exceeds 100% when all the measured components are added up.

If your phone is Android version 6.0 or above, you will be prompted to allow the Arboleaf app access your phone’s location. Without this permission, the Arboleaf app will not be able to make connection to your scale. Please tap the “ALLOW” button during the app setup. If you accidentally denied the access, you need to change it. You can do it from your phone’s settings.

Will my profile and measurements be kept private?

Yes, your profile and your measurements are kept private.

At Arboleaf we treat your privacy seriously. We deploy all efforts to protect the private nature of your personal information. Your personal information is only used as variables to determine body composition measurements.

Our servers are primarily located in the United States; our products and services may be provided using resources and servers located in various countries around the world. We use appropriate technical and organizational information security measures to protect your data.

For more details please read our Privacy Policy published on our website.

Please explain how the data are shared among friends and users

Once you set up your Arboleaf account, you can have Friends and Scale Users. A Scale User differs from a Friend.

A Scale User (also called a Measurement User or sometimes simply a User) refers to someone using the scale under your account. A Scale User doesn’t have a separate Arboleaf account. As the account owner, you set up your own Scale Users. You can see all of your Scale User’s data. You are also able to delete a scale user. Scale users are great for parents to track their children’s or coaches to track their clients’ measurements.

A Friend has his/her own Arboleaf account. Once accepted by both, two account owners become Friends (one sends a request, and another accepts). Friends can view each other’s measurement history. It is great for weight loss buddies to encourage each other and hold each other accountable.

Can we share the scale among family members but keep each person’s measurements private?

Yes, absolutely!

Two things need to do to keep everyone’s data private. First, each individual needs to download Arboleaf app to one’s own phone and create one’s own Arboleaf account. Second, when weighing you need to open the Arboleaf app on the “Measurements” screen, so your measurements will be directly sent to your account. In this case your data will not be saved in the scale, others won’t see your results.

Is Arboleaf mobile app GDPR compliant?

Yes.

We made upgrades to our Arboleaf mobile apps. Since version 1.3, for both iOS app and Android app, the Arboleaf mobile apps are compliant to the General Data Protection Regulation (EU) 2016/679 (“GDPR”) regulations. Now the Arboleaf smart scales are available in European markets.

One important feature is that you as a user can choose to delete your own account completely. You can remove your profile as well as all of your measurements. To do it, open your Arboleaf app, from the “My Account” screen, tap on “Settings” then tap on “Delete Account”.

How to delete my account?

To delete your account:

(1) Open your Arboleaf app, go to the “My Account” screen, and tap on “Settings”.

(2) Tap “Delete Account”.

(3) Tap “Confirm” to confirm your deletion.

Please explain the body composition scale safety

The Arboleaf Body Composition Smart Scales are safe to most people. However, please read Warnings and Cautions first before use the products. Do not use if you have a pacemaker, or any other internal medical devices in your body.

The Arboleaf scales uses Bio-electrical Impedance Analysis Method (BIA Method) to measure body compositions. This non-invasive test simply involves your feet touching the four electrode pads on the scale. It is safe as the electrical current is very low level and imperceptible.

This scale is not designed for babies or toddlers under 4 years old. Please use baby scales for small children.

There are no findings that body composition scales are dangerous to pregnant women. However, when pregnant your body compositions differ a lot. This scale will measure your weight accurately, but it is not designed to measure pregnant women’s body compositions.

My scale has a non-zero number, can’t get back to 0.0. How can I reset?

When your scale has a non-zero number, can’t get back to 0.0, your scale needs a power-on reset to get off this non-zero number. Please do following:

(1) Pull one battery out from your scale, and then put it back in.

(2) IMMEDIATELY place the scale on a hard flat surface.

(3) After you see the scale displays 0.0, close the battery cover.

I see my weight and BMI, but no body fat and other body composition measurements. What should I do?

There are several possible causes. Please make sure to eliminate following factors.

(1) Step on scale barefoot. Do not wear socks or shoes.

(2) Each foot needs to touch two metal pads, all four metal pads needs to be touched.

(3) When weighing do not get off the scale too quickly. Stand still until the measurement complete. First you see your weight will flash twice on your scale, then number “0” moves back and forth. When the “0” stops moving and your weight appears again, your measurements are done.

(4) Make sure the metal pads on the scale platform are clean. You can use damp cloth to clean.

(5) If you have dry feet or callus on your feet, it may affect the conductivity. You can use damp cloth to wipe your feet.

My data seem fluctuated. Is it normal?

Your body weight and your body compositions do change. It is normal to see your measurements fluctuate. Even within the same day, you may see different results when measuring at different times. We suggest you measure around same time and under similar conditions (e.g., before dinner) to maintain measurements consistent and comparable.

In terms of body fat and other body compositions, different equipment may give your different readings. Better to focus on relative changes of the values measured by a same device over long term.

My weight data seem inaccurate. What should I do?

Here are common causes and solutions:

(1) Your scale was not placed on a flat and hard surface. Please place your scale on a hard and flat floor. Avoid carpets and rugs.

(2) The scale did not properly reset. It has a residual number. You need to perform another power-on reset. Pull out one battery and put it back in, IMMEDIATELY place the scale on a hard flat surface. Make sure the scale displays “0.0”, and then close the battery cover.

(3) The scale was not calibrated when weighing. For each measurement, after turn the scale on, you need to wait “CAL” back to “0.0” before you step to take your measurement.

(4) Getting off your scale too soon may lead to inaccurate readings. Please stay on the scale until your weight number is stable.

My body fat data seem inaccurate and inconsistent. What should I do?

If you are a bodybuilder, this scale may not fit you well. If you are an athlete or someone work out intensively, you need to select the Athlete mode in your profile. The normal mode doesn’t work well with muscular users. It is a major factor causing body fat inaccuracy.

In terms of measurement consistency, human body weight and body fat do change during the day. We recommend users measure around same time each day and under similar conditions. For example, you can weigh yourself first thing in the morning, or in the evening weigh right before dinner each day, to keep things consistent.

Some users may notice that their body fat measured different from the data from other scales. It is indeed not unusual. Fat is a special and complex tissue in the human body. It includes subcutaneous fat, visceral fat, and others, and is widely present in various parts of the body. Currently there are several popular methods for measuring body fat percentage, different methods may produce different results. One method is called the DEXA Method (Dual Energy X-ray Absorption Method), while most household body fat scales employ another method called the BIA Method (Bio-electrical Impedance Analysis Method). The Arboleaf Smart Body Composition Scales use the BIA Method. It is worth noting that all methods present certain level of measurement discrepancies, and different manufacturers may implement with different algorithms too. No instrument can give absolute and correct answers.

Rather than concerning about different measurement values from different scales, here we should focus on relative changes of the values measured by the same device over long term. Sticking with the same assessment system will likely yield a better overall picture of a person’s health status. Again, we must stress that often relative changes of value are more meaningful than absolute value of a single measurement.

What should I do if the scale is not displaying the data, or if it displays something unusual?

There are several possibilities when a scale LED display doesn’t work properly.

(1) LED no display: Check the batteries. Check if the batteries are installed properly or replace new batteries if necessary.

(2) LED displays “Lo”: “Lo” refers to Low Battery. Check if the batteries are installed properly or replace new batteries if necessary.

(3) LED displays “EEr”: “EEr” refers to Error. The scale sensor may be overloaded or even damaged. Don’t use the scale if your weight is over the range. This scale only works for less than 396 lbs (180 kg).

My history shows some data not mine, how to avoid it?

There are a few possible situations.

First, if your scale has more users, or your app has set up multiple users, some other people’s measurements may load to your name. It may also happen when someone is using your scale without your knowledge. It is one case for your app retrieving some unknown measurements.

A second situation is that your app may pick up data from some other scales. It could happen when your app paired with this scale in the past. You don’t use this scale anymore, but you didn’t delete it from your app either. Your app may get data from this scale. To avoid it happening, simply remove these unused scales from your app. You should keep one scale in your app, your own scale.

To delete the unwanted data, please refer to “How can I delete a set of my measurement data?”
