Your birthday tells you how old you are, but it does not tell you everything about your body. Two people of the same age can have different body compositions and energy needs—and this is where metabolic age comes in.

What does this number mean, why might it differ from your actual age, and how is it calculated? This guide explains the basics and shows you how to make sense of your results.


What Is Metabolic Age?

Metabolic age compares your basal metabolic rate (BMR)—the calories your body burns at rest—with age-group averages to estimate whether your metabolism resembles that of someone younger, older, or your actual age.

Think about spending a quiet day resting on the couch. Even without exercising, your body still needs energy to keep your heart beating, your lungs working, and your temperature steady. BMR describes this baseline energy requirement, excluding the additional calories used for exercise and daily movement.

Your resting energy needs depend on factors such as body size, age, and muscle mass. This helps explain why two people born in the same year can receive different age estimates. For instance, a 40-year-old whose estimated BMR matches the reference for 35-year-olds in a particular system may receive a result of 35.

The distinction is straightforward:

How Is Metabolic Age Calculated?

The process starts with estimating resting energy needs. A calculator or device then uses reference data and its own method to express the comparison as an age.

Step 1: Gather Your Measurements

Most common prediction formulas use age, sex, height, and weight. Some methods also incorporate fat-free mass, which includes muscle, organs, bone, and water.

Use current measurements and check the units. The formulas below require kilograms for weight and centimeters for height.

Step 2: Estimate Your BMR

The Mifflin–St Jeor equation is commonly used in online BMR calculators. More precisely, it predicts resting energy expenditure, a closely related measure.

  • Men: 10 × weight (kg) + 6.25 × height (cm) − 5 × age + 5.

  • Women: 10 × weight (kg) + 6.25 × height (cm) − 5 × age − 161.

The original equation was developed using 498 healthy adults aged 19–78, whose resting energy expenditure was measured through indirect calorimetry. 

A simple example: For a 35-year-old woman weighing 65 kg and measuring 165 cm:

10 × 65 + 6.25 × 165 − 5 × 35 − 161 = approximately 1,345 calories per day.

That estimates resting energy needs. It is not her complete daily calorie allowance, because daily movement, exercise, and food processing require additional energy.

Step 3: Compare the Estimate with Reference Data

The calorie result does not automatically translate into an age. A tool needs a reference dataset and an algorithm to make that comparison.

There is no universal rule stating that “1,345 calories equals age 40.” Results depend on the population, physical characteristics, and calculation method considered. Online calculators may therefore produce different results from devices that incorporate body composition.

  • Higher than your actual age: Your estimate falls closer to an older reference group. It can prompt you to review muscle, body fat, and daily habits, but it does not diagnose a condition or prove accelerated aging.

Two people of the same weight can have different amounts of muscle and fat, as well as different resting energy needs. That is why body composition adds useful context.

How to Lower Your Metabolic Age

Focus on habits that support muscle maintenance, body composition, and overall metabolic health. Improvements do not follow a guaranteed timeline or translate into a fixed number of years.

  • Include strength training.
    Weights, resistance bands, and bodyweight exercises can help maintain and build muscle. General adult guidelines recommend muscle-strengthening activities on at least two days per week.

  • Eat balanced meals with adequate protein.
    Include foods such as eggs, fish, yogurt, beans, and tofu. If fat loss is your goal, choose sustainable dietary changes that also support muscle maintenance.

  • Move regularly.
    Aim toward 150 minutes of moderate-intensity activity per week, such as brisk walking or cycling. Shorter sessions count toward the total. 

  • Prioritize sleep and recovery.
    Keep a regular bedtime and a manageable exercise schedule. A routine you can maintain is more useful than continually restricting food or adding harder workouts to chase a score.
